Leiles kicks ass in Port of Spain

A purported Italian Leiles sprays up the capital, Trinidad, West Indies

This is one of the many works by a street graffiti artist who goes by the name, Leiles. The bubble gum typography means something, but to the layman on the street, the lettering is hard to decipher. Leiles may be sending a message to other local graffiti artists that this is the way in the professional graffiti world in technique and in speed. Unlike Louse's heaver renditions, Leiles has marked his territory with brightly coloured tones which are clean and his prolific aim to show what he can do in and about Port of Spain. He has also placed himself at the centre of a series of works done by Clinton Anthony Cummings. Clinton is one of the local street artists whose work has substance.

Addendum: A comment has clarified somewhat the spree of iconography by an graffiti artist tagged as HOWOK. The artist has spent a couple years between France and Italy and the sub- signature leiles is actually the name of his girl friend. Case closed.

This is in order to completely eradicate the graffiti out from dilapidated spots around the capital, Port of Spain. Trinidad. The work to which puzzled the public by its array of iconic symbolism pertaining to a pop culture may just hibernate until new ideas can resurface.

Quirky and bizarre graffiti in Port of Spain, Trinidad

The graffiti artist, Colin Gill has finally found a place which complements his quirky and bizarre work. The black and white graphic icon is painted on a wall which is enclosed to a plot of land that is in the process of some sort of construction. The work has a poetic resonance as the mounts of gravel and land clearing gives the installation a beauty in its panoramic view.

Previously, Gill's attempt on street art as a form of public expression had failed because his abstract paintings looked gimmicky, and it seemed to compete in territory with other graffiti artists.

The globalist, David Rockefeller explains that the role of a museum should have, and foresee the identification of contemporary art which will evolve into future art movements. He stressed that his mother's intuition set the ground work for American modern art from the early part of twentieth century. The founder, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller interest focused on emerging American artists. Established in 1928, the museum is considered as an influential gauge to modern art worldwide.

Mr. Cummings' work can be considered as visionary and his content is based on his christian upbringing. It is as Mr. Rockefeller conceded that the truth behind his upbringing was responsible for his taste in art which surrounded the very entity of his christian ethic. Clinton Anthony Cummings may very well look upon the Museum of Modern Art as a way to exhibit his work as they are an important conglomerate and collective essence of the role of art through the human experience of God, state and circumstances.

The process of Art Mr. Rockefeller explains is the highest form of creativity. Cummings shows that his inner intuition to express himself through these paintings should be appreciated from the layman to the professional alike. Whether any philanthropist are interested in his flight, only time will tell. Dream the impossible and the possible will reveal itself.

Clinton Anthony Cummings' Last Supper

The graffiti artist Clinton Anthony Cummings has completed to what appears to be a portrait of The Last Supper. The work is of Jesus of Nazareth with his twelve disciples before his betrayal and exicution. The biblical depiction has been painted many times by artists alike. The most famous and often copied is Leonardo da Vinci's fresco in Milan.

Cummings has painted The Last Supper with a group of people who may represent a part of Trinidad and Tobago. The figurehead may be the street artist himself and the work is a premonition of a nation that feels betrayed and neglected. Whoever the Judases may be in this wall painting, what it says is that it is an inner reflection on the society today. Clinton Anthony Cummings has put his faith and sacrifice to show that his passion and concerns are a small attribute that he cares for unity and brotherhood.

A public reminder - Traditional Mas

Stencils along High street, San Fernando

If you walk along parts of Port of Spain and San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, you may find remnants of spray-painted stencils on the roads and sidewalks. They were part of a public art project which in 2001, Trinidad and Tobago's traditional characters played their mas over the fact that the art and preservation of traditional mas is slowing dying.

Candelabrum in St. James

In Judaism, a candelabrum with seven branches is used in ceremonies to symbolize the seven days of Creation. The graffiti artist who is responsible for these Judeo-Christian inscriptions has done his home work. The candle stick indeed has seven holders along with some biblical quotations that occupy the walls of a cemetery, St. James, Trinidad.

Before the current influx of graffiti artists, dating back from the 1990s, this work and works like it was sprayed in blue paint in parts of the capital, Port of Spain.

It is advice one should take note of, and that is to always sign your Art work. On a wall on the narrow streets of Port of Spain,Trinidad the graffiti tagger, Loose has stenciled a figure of a young child looking upwards the heavens. Yet, a street artist has questioned his absence of ownership.

A love drawing

This wall drawing in pencil illustrates the first stages of courting. The artist has attempted to give his interpretation of a couple bonding together. The girlfriend is standing between the lap of her lover with her arms extended across his leg. In the sitting position, her man has his left hand ideally placed on her hip. There is however problems with the angle of the perspective as the left arm of his sweetheart is tangled at the centre of the composition.

The artist has made sure that he is anatomically accurate with her bust which seems to be quite perked to the delight of her partner. She bats her eye in acknowledgment.The illustrator has also signed his work which indicates how proud he is with the incomplete union.

Rastafarian Couture

On the skeleton walls of a building on the outskirts of the capital, Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, a Rastafarian has drawn a Rasta with a keen of Ras style and high couture. The garb may be for a Friday night fete as it looks quite tailored. The suit jacked has shoulder pads and the buttons are placed in line to the hem of the garment. It may be a Ras Chanel in light Caribbean blue or pink.

The well defined features of this groomed Rastafarian indicates his love of Gold. His broad smile shows it as an accessory to his wear. When is undetermined is the black scarf or wrap around his neck.

hallucinogenic eye

On a wall that curves with the pavement in St. James, Trinidad, West Indies, a fresco is mounted depicting many faces within a face. The artist may have been assisted by a hallucinogenic drug such as weed to give his interpretation of a man suffering from multi personalities. The mural looks as if it is a vision of mount Rushmore. And then, there is the horse-sea-serpent as skims to the surface...or is it a camel ? What ever the concept, the artist shows his knack for faces combined with a mixture of concrete and white paint to give the fresco a quality of a relief.

A study on the benefits of cannabis showed that vision could be improved as with the reasoning behind Jamaican fishermen who smoked it to alert a higher sense of their peripheral vision at night.

A Nation decides on her future


It may not have come from to place of the heart, but it brought a sense of debate at a moment in Trinidad and Tobago's history. On the wall of the old racing paddock at the Queen Park Savannah, a graffiti artist has painted quite crudely a four letter word with significant meaning to citizens of any country who have constitutional right too.

Esta is a little diluted

The phrase, Esta is a little diluted is what can be deciphered from this wall scribbling of text written in blue crayon. The artists has accompanied the script with a drawing of a nude woman with a fairly wide hip. Her hands are clasped in front of her vagina as an indication of self-protection, and If she is homeless, she is exposed to a hard street-life. Only the artist knows of her troubles.

A large cannabis leaf is drawn next to her, and a figure of a crude face are both illustrated in with a light pencil. There is much more to this photograph which is located in heart of Port of Spain, and like the artist it is the reality in which he lives, the manner in which he tells his story and the proverbs he leaves behind.
